We all have personal or professional goals that we’d like to achieve. They can vary greatly from person to person such as wanting to run a marathon, buy a home or get a promotion. A common hurdle for people accomplishing their goals is that they don’t feel achievable. This can lead to feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated.

There is a trick to goal setting. To make your goals really work for you – you have to break everything down into smaller achievable goals that will set you on the right path. Remember, it’s your daily habits that drive change.

Three steps to setting better goals

Step 1: Establish where you currently are

Take a look at what stage you are in your life right now. This can be personal, professional, or financial. How do you feel about your current situation? What would you like to change?

For example, Tom hasn’t been on holidays in a couple of years. There are plenty of countries on his bucket list, but with the cost of living and paying his home loan this just feels like a pipe dream.

Step 2: Create a vision for your future.

Are there areas of your life that you’d like to improve? What would you like it to look like? What are your dreams and aspirations?

Tom would love to travel to Europe. He’s always dreamed of visiting Italy and trying all the fantastic local cuisine.

Step 3: Create sub-goals for your vision.

Creating sub-goals allows you to take multiple small steps over time that will help you accomplish your overall vision.

Tom sets out what he needs to do to make his goal of visiting Italy a reality. He needs to:

- research where he would like to go in Italy;

- research costs of flights, accommodation and spending money for a two-week holiday;

- create a realistic budget for this trip;

- create a savings plan for this trip, eg, save $250 per month for the next two years; and

- set up a holiday savings account.

These sub-goals outline what actions Tom needs to take over the next two-years to make his trip to Italy a reality.
